What is Cystitis, Tips to prevent Cystitis?

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder generally caused by a bacterial infection. It is also more common in women – 1 in 2 women have a case of it in their lifetime. However, It usually is nothing serious and a mild case can resolve itself within a few days without any treatment. Although, the symptoms associated with it can be quite troublesome!

  • Symptoms usually also start suddenly
  • Pain or burning sensation when passing urine
  • Urinating more frequently and waking up during the night to urinate
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Only passing small amounts of urine (drops)
  • Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
  • Cloudy, strong/foul smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal pain or tenderness
  • Lower back pain
Treatment and Tips on preventing it!!

Paracetamol or Ibuprofen can also be used to relieve any pain associated with cystitis. Potassium citrate, sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate based products also available over the counter that can help relieve the symptoms. 

Self-help tips:
  • Drink plenty of water!! – flush out the bladder
  • Wipe front to back after using the toilet
  • Completely empty your bladder – wait 20 seconds after emptying and then strain to empty the final drops
  • Avoid sexual intercourse or make sure you urinate immediately afterwards
  • Urinate frequently
  • Drink cranberry juice – although there is very little evidence to suggest its effectiveness
