When does priapism occur?

Priapism is a condition in which the erection of the penis lasts for more than 4 hours. It can cause severe pain. However, it is an uncommon condition. Doctors say that men who have sickle cell anemia are more prone to this prolonged erection. Physical and psychological motivation may result in causing it. These excitements make the muscles relax and elevate blood flow to the elastic tissues in the penis. It causes the erection. Once the arousal is cut off, the penis attains its non-erect form.

In the case of priapism, the blood flow may face a disturbance. In addition, certain other things can also trigger this condition. They may include-

  • Prescription medication like alpha-blockers and ED medications
  • Blood disorders like multiple myeloma and sickle cell anemia
  • Injury in or around the penis or pelvic region
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Alcohol
  • Certain type of cancer, including that in the penis

When should I reach out to a doctor?

If the erection lasts for more than 4 hours, you must reach out to your doctor. The doctor may diagnose the type of priapism you have (ischemic or non-ischemic). Ruling it out is significant, as it determines the treatment methods suitable for the condition.

Ischemic priapism

It is a type of penis condition in which the blood remains unable to walk out of the organ. This is the most common condition of prolonged erection. You may notice-

  • The erection may last for four hours or even longer; it has no relation to sexual activity
  • The penile pain increases gradually

Non-ischemic priapism

It is a condition in which the blood flow in the penis is not coordinated properly. This type of prolonged erection is less painful than the ischemic one. Here,-

  • Erection may last for 4 hours or even longer
  • The penis becomes erect, but the penile slab remains non-rigid

As a result of the diagnosis, your doctor may prescribe suitable medications to address your problem. In the meanwhile, you can also ask for some prevention against prolonged erection.
