What is Period Pain, How to get relief?

Period pain is the pain that occurs during your monthly menstrual cycle and it is extremely common.  Up to three quarters of young women and up to a half of adult women experience some discomfort or pain during their period.

Some of the symptoms include:
  • Cramping or aching in the lower parts of your body
  • Fatigue
  • Pain that extends to your back thighs and pelvic area
  • Nausea
  • Breast Tenderness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches

What causes this pain?

The uterus contracts during your period in order to shed its lining. During these contractions the blood vessels that line the uterus are temporarily compressed, this prevents oxygen from reaching the tissues of the uterus for a short time. As a result of this the uterus releases chemicals (prostaglandins) which cause pain and inflammation. The pain is usually at its worst when bleeding is at its heaviest.

Treatments

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) – these are most commonly used to treat period pain as they help to reduce inflammation. NSAIDS are available over the counter with the most common being ibuprofen.
  • Paracetamol can offer some relief, however NSAIDS are more effective.
  • If over the counter drugs are not helping the doctor may prescribe another NSAID or pain relief drug.
  • Oral Contraceptive Pill – This is sometimes prescribed as it thins the lining of the uterus. This means that there is less for the uterus to shed and therefore there is less release of prostaglandins.
  • If your period pain is really intense and no over the counter remedies are helping then you should consult a doctor to rule out any underlying conditions.

Self-help or Alternatives

  • Exercise – the last thing you probably thing about when you’re in pain is exercise, however many people find that gentle exercise activity such as a light jog or walk can help ease some of the pain.
  • Heat – Applying a heat pad or hot water bottle to your abdomen can help to relive painful cramping. A hot bath or shower can also be effective.
  • Relaxation techniques such as medication or yoga.
  • TENS machine
